NIHE Adaptions to Homes for People with Disabilities
That this Council recognises the importance of the NIHE Disabled Facilities Grant in making adaptions to a person’s home who are living with a disability or illness; affirms that those living with a disability or illness face daily challenges, and deserve the same level of access and inclusion in our society; welcomes the additional £10.5 million allocated by the Minister of Finance to the Department of Communities in 2025/2026 towards NIHE Disability Facilities Grants; regrets that that the maximum grant threshold has not been increased by the Department of Communities since 2023; laments the current maximum threshold of £70K falls short, and does not reflect the current cost of supplies and materials which is increasing year on year; acknowledges the financial burden on individuals whose required housing adaptions exceed the maximum NIHE Disabled Facilities grant funding limit of £70K; and calls on this Council to write to the Minister of Communities to ask that he consider increasing the maximum limit for the NIHE Disabled Facilities Grant threshold of £70K particularly in those circumstances were the scope and cost of the adaptions recommended by the occupational therapist exceeds the financial limits of the NIHE Disability Facilities Grant of £70K.
